Opening 70 for Fisher in Dubai
Ross shot a two-under par first round on a blustery opening morning to lie just two strokes adrift of the early leaders in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club.

"It was very difficult out there," said Ross after a long birdie put on his final hole was the perfect end to a tough day.  "The wind was quite strong, and with that comes sand in the air which adds an extra edge to an already testing challenge.  I played nicely and will take 70 out there in those brutal conditions."

Ross bogeyed the 12th (his 3rd) after he failed to get up and down from the thick rough at the edge of the green.  But he followed that disappointment with a near flawless eagle on the par-5 13th: a perfect drawn drive took the corner off the dog-leg, a solid 3-iron approach to six feet followed, as did the putt.

Two further bogeys would be added to Fishers card, but so were three birdies on holes 2, 4 and 9.  The 4th hole was the most unlikely birdie of the lot as Ross sunk a 40 footer from the edge of the green, and the 70th stroke of his round was a 30 foot birdie on the last!

But Ross was quick to admit that his performance deserved a few breaks:

Ross shares a joke with Martin Kaymer during the 1st round in Dubai

"Yeah, its always nice to see the odd 30 to 40 footer drop in the hole, but I hit a few nice putts, particularly on the front nine, that didn't drop.  I got a few unluckly lies off the tee, and had to rely on my shotgame.  Overall I feel I played well enough to deserve at least a 70 this morning, and I have given myself a solid base to work on tomorrow and make a move."
